Chapter 16: The Church Is for Everyone

In this lesson your child learned how we are to live as Jesus' followers and members of His Church. He or she learned that Jesus said, "Love one another just as I have loved you" (John 15:12). We call this the new commandment. One way to help young children grow as followers of Jesus Christ is to provide them with consistent examples of Christian values such as patience, truthfulness, honesty, compassion, justice, and love. We can also be models for them by saying "I'm sorry" and asking for forgiveness when we are wrong or hurt someone.

Parish Helpers

Each person in your parish has different talents. Discuss with your child the different talents that people share to make the parish a special place. Help your child identify that he or she can do many things to help the parish and school. Take time to name a few.

A Visit to Our Church

Take your child to visit your parish church during the week. Bless yourselves with holy water at the door, then go to the place where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. Genuflect and pray a short prayer together to Jesus, who is present in the Blessed Sacrament. Then walk around the church noticing the statues, the stations of the cross, and the stained-glass windows. Talk quietly about what you see.
