Chapter 22: Our Parish Church

This week your child learned about the parish as our home in the Catholic Church. It is essential that Catholics know and experience welcome and a sense of belonging in the parish. You can begin to build up that sense of "home" for your child by participating as fully as possible in the liturgical, catechetical, and pastoral life of your parish.

Your child also learned that parishes are joined together in a diocese under the leadership and authority of a bishop. The bishops, together with the pope as bishop of Rome, serve as the teachers and leaders in the universal Church.

Helpers in Our Parish

You might like to tell your child about the people in your parish who help. There are people who visit the sick, who read the word of God at Mass, who give out Holy Communion, who serve at the altar, who reach out to the poor and work for justice, and so on. If possible, introduce your child to one of these ministers and encourage your child to talk to the minister about his or her service.
