Chapter 23: Our Catholic Church

This week your child learned that the Catholic Church is a community of prayer. It is also a worshiping community that celebrates the sacraments together. When we take part often, knowingly, and actively in the Church's life of prayer and worship, we experience ourselves as a priestly people. This is an aspect of our baptismal commitment to "proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called us out of darkness into God's own marvelous light" (from 1 Peter 2:9).

Celebrating the sacraments and praying often as a family are wonderful ways to help our children grow strong in their Catholic faith and in their love of God and neighbor.

Ways to Pray

Your child has circled, on page 218, ways in which he or she will pray this week. Help your child find a time and place for prayer. An appropriate time for this is before your child goes to sleep at night.

Grace at Meals

Saying grace before and after meals is a wonderful custom. If your family does not usually say grace, you might want to begin the practice. The traditional grace prayers at meals are on page 276. Occasionally you might encourage family members to take turns offering spontaneous meal prayers.
