Chapter 24: The Church Helps People

The Church's teaching on justice and peace is soundly rooted in the Old and New Testaments. That the covenant demands justice is a constant theme of the prophets.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our Savior. He came to set us free from sin. Through Him, we have life in all its fullness and know God as our Father.

From the proclamation of Jesus' birth to His farewell at the Last Supper, His mission brought justice and peace for all people. The Catholic Church clearly teaches that our Christian faith gives us serious social responsibilities. All of us are called to work for God's kingdom of justice and peace in the world. We follow the example of Jesus, who had compassion for all people.

Children need to be given opportunities to practice fairness and forgiveness in their daily lives. The family is the most important place for developing the virtues of justice, mercy, and peace.

Quiet Time

Spend time in quiet reflection, praying with your child about his or her worries. Encourage your child to place his or her worries in Jesus' hands and to ask Jesus for courage. Invite your child to show you the quiet prayer he or she learned this week (see page 228).
