Chapter 11: We Prepare for Reconciliation

Your child is learning how to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation. You can help your child decide when he or she is ready to celebrate this sacrament for the first time. One way to teach your child how to prepare for this celebration is by helping him or her in an examination of conscience, using the Ten Commandments as guides (see pages 90-91 in your child's book). It is important to remember to ask yourself not only what you have done wrong, but also what good you have failed to do and how you plan to do better. When your child is ready to celebrate the sacrament, you might want to do the same.

An Examination of Conscience

Help your child make an examination of conscience, using the commandments as a guide. Some questions to be asked might be:

  • Have I done what God wants?
  • Have I used God's name in a bad way?
  • Have I shared in Sunday Mass?
  • Have I been obedient?
  • Do I take care of my body?
  • Have I told the truth?
