The Mass is the greatest prayer of the Church. Participating
regularly in the Mass is a powerful source of our
identity as Catholics. In fact, the Church reminds us
that it is our Sunday obligation. Your child has learned
that the Mass is both a meal and a sacrifice. At Mass we
remember and celebrate Jesus' life, death, and
resurrection. Your child also knows that Jesus gives us
Himself in Holy Communion so that we may grow to be more
like Him and follow His way.
It is important to help your child develop a lifelong love for the
Mass. To do this, your family must model an enthusiasm
for participating in the Mass every weekend and for
receiving Jesus, our Bread of Life, in Holy Communion.
A Gospel Story
Invite your child to share with you the gospel account of Jesus'
feeding the five thousand. (See page 138 of your child's
text or Mark 8:1-8.) Have him or her tell you what he or
she imagined during the class exercise on page 139. Ask
your child whether Jesus feeds us in a special way and
how.
Participating at Mass
If this has not already been done in school, help your child put
together the Mass Booklet (pages 267-270). Encourage
your child to bring the booklet to Mass and to follow as
closely as possible. Make sure that your child is
familiar with the responses. Encourage him or her to
respond with the assembly.
