Your child has learned how important it is to listen carefully to
the readings at Mass during the first part of the Mass,
the Liturgy of the Word. He or she has been taught to
think about what God is saying to each of us in the
Bible readings. Through the Bible, God teaches us how to
live as the people of God and to be disciples of Jesus.
The Liturgy of the Word is not simply a prelude to what
is about to happen in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It
is an integral part of our worship experience as
Catholics in the celebration of Mass.
To help your child become more attentive to God's word, try to
discuss one of the Bible readings after Mass each week.
To prepare for this discussion, it may help to remind
your family members to listen carefully during the
Liturgy of the Word.
The Sunday Gospel
Take a few minutes sometime during the week to go over next Sunday's
gospel together. It will help both you and your child to
be a more attentive listener at Mass. Then, when you
come home, invite your child to act out or draw what he
or she heard in the gospel.
Family Petitions
Invite your child to share with you the prayer of the faithful he or
she made up on page 166. Then talk together about other
petitions family members might want to make for your
family, your parish, and the world. You might want to
share these prayers at a family meal.
