Your child has learned that during the Liturgy of the Eucharist the
priest does what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Through
the words and actions of the priest and by the power of
the Holy Spirit, the bread and wine become the Body and
Blood of Christ. Jesus is really and truly present in
the Blessed Sacrament. We call this the real presence.
Your child also learned that we bring the gift of
ourselves when we gather as the eucharistic assembly.
Explain to your child the importance of bringing the gift of oneself
to Mass. Talk to your family about the "gift of
self" that each will offer to God at Mass this
week. Encourage family members to choose one special act
of love each will do.
Family Prayer
Pray together one of the responses we make to proclaim the mystery
of faith.
Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.
Encourage your child to join in this acclamation when it is sung at
Mass. Spend a few moments sharing your faith in Christ
and your understanding of each line of this acclamation.
A Family Mass
Talk with your pastor and your child's teacher about the possibility
of having the families of all the second graders in the
parish celebrate Mass together. It would be an
opportunity for the children to experience "up
close" what happens at Mass.
