Chapter 17: Jesus Is Our Teacher

In this lesson your child learned that Jesus Christ teaches us how God wants us to live. Jesus said, "Love God above all things. Love other people as you love yourself" (from Mark 12:-29-31). Help your child remember these words by repeating them after you, phrase by phrase.

The most significant aspect of the Law of Love as Jesus taught is that He clearly united love of God, love of others, and love of self. No Hebrew prophet before Him had been so clear about the unity of these "three" loves.

Go over the Faith Summary on page 113 with your child. Ask, "What did Jesus teach us about love?"

Children need to be taught how to give and how to receive love. Take time to help your child show love for God and others through simple things, such as thanking God for family, friends, and food; and through learning how to share and to be fair and kind. In a special way we are to be loving toward the poor and to those people most in need. Praise your child's efforts to do this.

A Loving Hand

Ask your child to name some people that he or she loves. Help your child write the names of these people on the fingers of the loving hand. Then talk about ways to show love for these people. Each time your child shows a special sign of love, have your child draw a ring on the finger of that person.
