This lesson focused on what it means to be a family. Your child
reflected on your family as God's gift and explored ways
family members show love and care for one another. To
reinforce your family's loving concerns, tell some
favorite family stories that will help your child
identify the many kind things you do for one another at
home. Take a few minutes to go over the Faith Summary
on page 137 with your child.
Find ways to let your five-year-old share not only in family
celebrations but also in family work. Praise your
child's efforts to be helpful and kind. Generosity and
altruism are not always instinctive with five-year-olds,
but they will respond to encouragement and praise. Help
them to understand that being kind to others is what
Jesus asks all of us to do in His Church.
Our Family Tree
Give your child small white paper plates, one for each family
member. Have your child draw one family member on each
plate. Decorate to show the specialness of each family
member (favorite color, sport, hobby, etc.). Punch a
hole at the top and add string. Hang the plate on a tree
branch that is set in a pot of sand.
