Building upon the children's widening experiences of relationships,
this lesson helped them discover that at Baptism, each
one was welcomed into God's special family, the Church.
By water and the Holy Spirit we become something
new--new people of God and members of the Church. In
many ways, the Second Vatican Council restored the full
meaning of Baptism for us Catholics. By Baptism we have
the right and responsibility to participate fully in the
mission and ministry that Jesus gave to the Church.
A way of helping your child to understand that he or she belongs to
the Church, is to celebrate his or her baptismal day in
a special way. The celebration can be as simple as
lighting a candle at dinner or at bedtime on that day.
Your child was also taught how to pray the sign of the cross. Point
out that this is a prayer Catholics say as a sign that
we belong to God's special family, the Church.
Take a few minutes now to go over the Faith Summary on page
143 with your child. Ask, "What happened when you
were baptized?"
My Baptism
Talk with your child about his or her Baptism. Then help your child
to complete the information on page 143.
