Chapter 24: God's Family Helps One Another

This lesson is designed to deepen your child's emerging moral life by introducing the healing and comforting works of Jesus. Your child has learned about Jesus' loving actions revealed in the Scriptures. Your child also heard Jesus' words calling us to "love one another as I love you." This means that as followers of Jesus Christ, all Christians must help and care for others. We must be kind and just (fair) to everyone. Here we have the very core of what it means to live as a Catholic. We are to follow the way and the values of Jesus in both our personal and social lives.

During this week talk to your child about the ways Jesus helped all people. Point out that Jesus helped the young people and old people, persons who were liked, and persons who were avoided by others. Then go over the Faith Summary on page 155 together to see whether your child can tell you how Jesus helped others and how Jesus wants us to love.

Hands in Harmony

Organize a family project to help others. You may choose one of the following or make up your own. Your parish may also have a program involving these projects:

  1. Prepare a meal for a shut-in.
  2. Collect old clothes and toys for the poor.
  3. Send a note or record a family message or song to cheer someone who may be ill or lonely.

Have your child draw how he or she can help to bring a sense of harmony to his or her world.
