Chapter 26: God Blesses Us with Holy Water

In this lesson your child learned about holy water, a sacramental of the Church. A sacramental is a sacred sign blessed by the Church to deepen our understanding of the faith. Sacramentals include a variety of signs; for example, the sign of the cross, medals, statues, blessed ashes, palms, grace at meals, and holy water.

Your child learned that holy water is a symbol of blessing from God. It helps us to remember that we are baptized members of God's family, the Church, and children of God. Go over the Faith Summary on page 167 to see whether your child remembers these two important ideas.

The next time you go to church together, stop at the holy water font. Show your child how to take some holy water to make the sign of the cross.

A Holy Water Sponge

Take a sponge and cut out the initial of your child's first name or of your family's last name. Place the sponge in a dish. Obtain holy water from your parish church and pour it into the sponge and dish. Put the dish near the special place where your family gathers together. Encourage your family to bless themselves each day.
