In this lesson your child learned that the earth and all that comes
from it--trees, plants, and flowers--are God's gift to
us. Catholics believe in the sacramentality of all
nature--that God is present to us in all creation. Take
a minute to go over the Faith Summary on
page 65 together as a way of focusing on the key points
of this lesson.
During this week work together to become more aware of the wide
variety of plants, trees, and flowers in your
environment. Help your child learn some of their names.
Point out and name plants that are used for food.
Discuss how God has filled the earth with plants,
flowers, and trees to feed us and for us to enjoy and
care for.
Planting a Seed
Help your child to plant a seed and care for it. Use a seed such as
a dry lima or pinto bean. Soak it overnight. Help your
child to put some soil in a cup or similar container.
Cover the seed with soil, water it, and place it in the
sun. As the plant grows, discuss what is happening.
Talk about the miracle of new life and growth in God's creation.
Work together to follow the plant's growth from seed to
flower in the chart. Have your child draw in the
chart to show the plant's progress as it grows.
When the plant has grown have a moment of praise for God's gift.
Pray together, "Thank You, God, for helping this
seed become a plant."
